Do you feel constricted when you feel criticism? Do you feel lighter and open when you feel gratitude? 
 Yet isn’t it difficult to consciously change criticism to gratitude?

To make this change, don’t focus on the emotion. 
Instead notice the physical feeling of criticism (or other negative feeling). Notice the constriction. Now imagine it loosen up. Feel your chest and solar plexus expand. Sense it transform to physical openness. Imagine the deep breath you can now take. Keep breathing deeply.

Now think of something you feel grateful for. It can be small or big. Link that thought to the deep open breaths you feel.
Do this often and gratitude will be easier to access.
